If you want to know your options in the backend of Avada theme, this article will give you that flavour.
By backend I mean the admin panel in WordPress where you can play around with different options and settings to adjust your theme’s presentation and functioning.
It is like a cockpit from where you fly the plane of Avada.
Having used Avada theme for over 3 years and being a satisfied user of it, my intention is to help you if you are in two minds about buying this theme. This article will explore the extent and nature of controls you get with the theme.
A few housekeeping issues first as this is a slightly unusual article.
- There are 25 snapshots included in this article, each representing a heading from the menu in Avada Theme Settings.
- There is a table of content at the top of this article which will help you jump to the section of your choice. Don’t hesitate to frequently refer back to it for quick navigation.
- There is a lot of information in each snippet. If you can’t see each setting/wording clearly, try zooming in on your laptop or mobile screen.
- The theme settings are relevant to Avada 5.3.1 at the time of publishing this article. I aim to update this article when there are significant changes in the theme settings.

This is by no means a full tutorial of every single setting in Avada theme, this is more of a high level review to give you an idea about how versatile and flexible Avada theme is.
Let’s dive in.
But before we do that, I need a small favour.

When you enter your choice, you will see the results of this survey in real time and updated as of now.
The first option in Avada theme settings is about how you want the general layout of your blog or website to look like.
This is where you decide between the boxed or wide setup, the width of your site and defining the sizes of the sidebars should you wish to use them (which is confirmed separately and discussed further down).
There are two parts to setting up menus in Avada.
1 – WordPress has its own function to define menus and set up their content. You do it through main dashboard >> appearance >> menus. Avada offers five different locations to showcase your menus, you can check more details here on Theme Fusion’s official help page.
2 – Once you have got your menus set up, Avada offers different styling options for your main menu, secondary menu, flyout menu, mobile menu and mega menu etc. This depends on which particular menu type you want to format and design for your need.
Web is all about increasing use of mobile devices nowadays.
Your website needs to be fully responsive to different platforms such as tablets and smartphones etc.
Avada gives you an option to turn this responsiveness on or off from this menu. I can’t see any reason why someone would like to turn it off though.
Alongside the main switch, it also offers options for setting thresholds to trigger responsiveness and a few other settings to adjust display on smaller screens.
This tab only provides a high-level colouring option for your theme such as theme skin colour and highlight colour etc.
The individual elements are not designed here. They are separately covered under each heading where they are applicable. Such as header font, lines and background colours under headers and footer/copyright text, lines and background colours under footers.
Header is an important element of your website. It is the face of your blog or website which visitor sees first.
Avada offers six different types of headers which you can choose from. The snapshot below only covers the styling of the main header but in other sub-headings, you can style items like background, padding, margins and colours etc.
You can also select the sticky header option which always remain on the screen if you scroll down the page.
Logo and Favicon settings are relatively straight forward.
You simply upload the relevant logo and favicon image files under this heading and they get applied to your website.
Note that when it comes to adjusting the logo in your header or generally on your website, it may take a few attempts for the logo to fit in nicely and look professional. It is dependent on the file size of your logo as well. As an example a 200 x 50 px rectangular logo might behave differently to a 500 x 500 px square logo.
Page title bar and breadcrumbs settings are bundled under this heading.
Page (or post) title bar appears on top of every page or post on your blog. It has some SEO value attached to it as well but in my case, although I have turned it on, I have actually hidden it for general display through custom CSS.
Breadcrumbs are slightly different though.
I feel that they are quite important from the end user experience perspective and also from the SEO side of things. Hence you can see that they appear on every single page on REASONTOUSE.
Sliding bar is a nice feature where a small icon sits in the top corner on your website all the time.
If you press it, it expands into a drag-down list/box where different widgets (pieces of information) can be displayed. Full details of how to set up the sliding bar can be found on Theme Fusion’s support page.
Currently, I do not use the sliding bar feature on my blog but I can see its utility and won’t be surprised if I use it in future.
The footer on your website is an important place if you carefully position useful information there for your visitors.
In Avada’s footer settings, you get 3 sub-menus.
1 – You choose the main footer layout and arrangement of columns in the first part. You decide about the number of columns to display, effects you can create (parallax etc.) and also the copyright bar and its contents.
2 – In this heading, you can use an image of your choice to act as a background for the footer.
3 – Finally, the styling options (colours, lines, fonts etc.) can be adjusted from the footer styling sub-menu.
There are two schools of thought on using sidebars in blogs and websites.
The more common approach is using a right hand sidebar.
A growing trend is having no sidebars (in blogs especially) as they add to distraction and dilute the message.
I am with the second group. I don’t use sidebar any more.
However, in this option, you are given individual page types (pages, blog posts, search pages and archive pages etc.) to set sidebar strategy for each one of them. You can choose to turn them on or off for a particular type of post in question.
The content of the sidebars is set up using WordPress internal function through main dashboard >> appearance >> widgets.
You can either leave the background of your blog as a solid colour of your choice or you can use a background image as well to spice up the things. I use light-colour background.
Similarly, in boxed mode, you have an option to define the colour, image or pattern for the area outside of the main site.
Choice and presentation of fonts are fundamental to your blog design.
In this section you can select global settings for your body font and all the headings (H1 to H6). You can also choose your font and its style for post titles here.
This is where you define the layout/style of your general blog page (collection of post titles and excerpts for visitors to choose).
Avada offers a few different types of blog layouts such as large, medium, grid and timeline etc.
Under the same menu, you can also define the settings for individual (single) blog posts and how the meta data (date, author, comments etc.) is set to display.
Portfolio posts are custom post type designed to highlight your portfolio building.
Just like above, portfolio blog layout and single portfolio post settings can be adjusted in this section.
You can define in this section which social media profiles you want to set up and use on your blog.
You confirm your social account URL address in this step. These icons are then called in different places through separate function. Such as in header menu or footer etc.
You can see that I have called these social media icons in my footer as a constant feature on every page on REASONTOUSE.
Slideshows are applicable where you have more than one image assigned as featured image on a blog post. You can choose to rotate these images through this option.
Avada comes with a simple and beautiful elastic slider as a built-in option for its user. This is in addition to other premium sliders such as Revolution Slider and Layer Slider.
For those who like to use sliders will be spoilt for choice here but for me personally, I am not a huge fan of them. I haven’t used any slider on this blog.
You can display your images in lightbox in Avada.
A full set of options allow you to choose a theme of your choice along with what level of information you want to display with the images.
Avada comes with an option to install the famous Contact Form 7 plugin.
However, if you are like me and don’t want to use that contact form, you can set up a simple contact form from within the Avada’s built-in options. This also includes Google Maps and visual contact information as well.
When your visitor presses the search button on your blog, he is met with the search results page.
This option lets you design that page and how the information will be displayed to your visitors.
All those settings which do not fit elsewhere under a separate heading are collectively presented in this section. You will see plenty of sub-headings here to fine-tune various design options given by Avada.
Under this section, you can insert your own code snippets in various parts of the theme.
I am not very technical in this however as you can see, I have inserted my Google Analytics code in this area along with the speedier Google Fonts loading code further down.
If you like making changes to your theme presentation and design, this is where you can insert custom CSS (code) in your theme.
The code from this box takes priority over the base theme files and end results are displayed accordingly.
This section allows you to set the global options for various fusion builder elements such as buttons, titles, content boxes, carousals and containers etc. – the list is long.
These global options can be overridden when setting up the elements individually but if unchanged at the time of installation, these settings are displayed.
As you might have guessed by now, Avada has a lot of options which are difficult to remember.
A simple mistake or error can cause all your hard work go waste. Hence Avada offers to import and export your theme settings which can be used as and when required.
