Social media can be overwhelming.

It is a huge ocean in which anyone can get distracted, sidetracked and lose the focus very easily.

I will give you one example of Twitter only where we have seen an increase from  5,000 tweets per day in 2007 to over 500,000,000 tweets per day. With nearly half a billion tweets every day and a similar trend on other social media platforms as well, you need to do things in a disciplined and managed way to be more effective and engaging. Simple.

So who is this article for?

This article is for anyone who wants to be more disciplined, smart and effective with their postings on the social media – primarily Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. I am going to use these three services only for this article because they are the most widely used platforms at the time of writing this article.

On top of that, if you are a blogger or a website owner like me, it is a must for you to be extra smart with your social media habits. Marketing through social media is a reality we can not deny in today’s world.

So how can you improve your social media posting habits?

Why Buffer App?

My desired posting frequency is 3-5 posts on Twitter and 1-2 posts on Facebook and Google Plus daily.

Yours can be more or less but for me this means going to these websites or mobile apps potentially up to nine times a day to post. Difficult and if I tell you honestly, impossible to maintain for a long period of time considering busy routine and thousands of things we need to do on internet when we sit in front of our computer.

This is where the Buffer App comes in.

I don’t want to distract you by saying that there are various other social media posting app options available on the internet at the moment. Google with the keywords “social media management tools” and you will be busy for hours trying to find the best option for you. This is a difficult way.

There is an easier option. That is to keep reading this article.

I am going to show you a nice and easy tool which is free (paid for advanced features only) and gives you almost all the options you need to start managing your social media postings – I am assuming you have never used such tool before or if you have, you want to explore the Buffer App and hence reading this article.

I want you to benefit from my experience.

I went the difficult way, I did research for about a week when I started doing the social media for my blog and wanted to start with something which is easy to use and free – still giving me as many options as possible (I know it is a human nature, pay less, get more).

In the end, I settled for the Buffer.

Buffer is a great tool where you can write a bunch of posts at one time, and choose which social profiles to send them to, and then Buffer will spread them out throughout the day or week so that you don’t have to be at a computer all the time in order to have a social media presence – BUFFERAPP.COM

Free for my level of use, easy and clean interface. Their free service allowed me to connect my main Twitter profile, Facebook page and the Google Plus page which is exactly what I wanted. If you are active on all or any of these platforms as well, Buffer is definitely an option.

But I have to convince you further.

Mechanics of Buffer

This is not a tutorial of how to do x, y and z.

My reviews are summaries of my findings, feedback and suggestions. I trust my readers to understand the logic and they should be able to sort out the fine details themselves. Explaining fine-details through text is not a good idea in my opinion (tell me what you think about my logic in the post comments below)

Registering on Buffer is extremely easy.

The free service will allow you to connect the above shown services. You can only choose one each from Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. This is all I wanted. I am sure for someone starting the social media management through a consolidated platform, these options should be well enough to make a start. You can see my all three connected accounts on the left hand side of the picture above.

Next comes the main options. See picture below.

Social Media Posting App - Buffer Options

Social Media Posting App interface can be busy and distracting. Buffer is completely opposite. The design team has done an excellent job to keep the interface clutter free and welcoming. Something you can only appreciate and enjoy when you start using the service.

There are 4 main options in the main screen.

Content – This where your post goes. Your tweet, facebook status, Google Plus link, picture, video link or anything else. You can use hashtags and the link shortener facility is available as well. If you are running short of content to share, two useful features for free members are “suggestions” where a feed of quality content is available to share  and the second option to link your own feed through “feeds” option. All in all, nice and simple interface with brilliant practicality and user experience. You can decide within the main window which platforms you want this particular post to be issued to.

Analytics – Depending upon your level or experience, you will need to know the statistics and user engagement of your posted items at some stage. This option gives you a visibility of each and every post sent through Buffer App. While the detailed analytics are restricted to paid membership, I found the available “open to free members” options to be useful and enough for my use.

Schedule – I am not going to tell you here what are the best timings to set under this option to send posts out on different platforms. This is for you to decide and research. All I can say is that internet and hence social media is a 24×7 business, spread your posts carefully to achieve maximum results. There is a lot of research done in this field. Develop the understanding of your audience and their location and adjust your posting times accordingly.

Settings – They are self explanatory – It gives you options to set your link shortening preferences, disconnect and reconnect your networks (platforms), empty your existing queue of posts and remove your connected network. All simple and intuitive.

Buffer App is Fun to Use

Yes it can be.

Buffer is always a fun and enjoyable experience for me. Light, intuitive, reliable and responsive. You need to start using it to appreciate it fully.

There are two very useful elements of their service. Their FAQ page which details the function and features within the Buffer setup in great depth and second is their blog which is full of excellent and informative articles related to research and social media trends. Something you don’t want to miss if you are serious about marketing your business through social media.

I suggest if you are either active on more than one social media platform or if your posting frequency is more than a couple of times per day, start thinking about using a “social media management tool” such as Buffer. It will make your life easier.

There is nothing to lose. It is free to start with. Use if for few months and if you like it, you can go for their “Awesome Plan”. It is not very expensive. Something around $10 per month at the time of writing this article. But my advice would be to try it first and see if it addresses your requirements.

Your turn now.

Have I convinced you to try Buffer?

If not, what is the reason for that?
